Jean Christophe Couet beyond ‘Transmission’.
Q: You’ve achieved numerous awards throughout your career. Beyond your dedication to art, is there anyone you’d like to express gratitude to, someone who played a pivotal role in recognizing your exceptional talent?
A: Winning awards is usually down to good work and its exposure. There are many great pieces of work who never get the light of day because they are not sufficiently exposed to those who curate the festivals or awards.
Q: Your creative influences are diverse. Could you share your favorite movie genre, actor/actress, and photographers, and how these elements influence your artistic aesthetic?
A: I don’t have a favorite film genre, but I love Cate Blanchett. I saw her on Broadway in Anton Chekov’s The Present and I was terribly moved by its emotional layers and strength. One of my favorite film makers is Ari Kaurismäki, and I love his continued use of the same pool of actors. I am generally influenced by work that touches me.
Jean Christophe Couet about Transmission.
Q: “Transmission” is your ongoing project, born during the pandemic. Could you tell us more about it and the inspiration behind it?
A: Transmission is a visual arts project that allows the disconnect of author from voice to become a powerful realignment of perspective, offering people the ability to listen to themselves. Through text, audio, and film, Transmission connects the vulnerable, through the voices of their shared isolation. Transmission was prompted by the desire to keep my friend James, who suffers from multiple sclerosis (MS), alert and thoughtful at the start of the pandemic. He was in dire need of emotional and mental support.
Q: It’s truly a remarkable project with a profound purpose. Could you elaborate on how Transmission evolved and its impact on both you and the participants?
A: As Transmission grew, its process crystallized. Phone calls and emails chimed in with initial introductory discussions. There were few discussions about who and where but rather what and how. Within seconds, intimacy was achieved, and a safe place was born to speak about anything and everything. The readers rapidly took to the literature and made it their own.
Q:If you could choose a photograph taken by someone else and make it your own, which one would it be, and why?
A: Any image from Robert Frank’s “The Americans.” They are all so beautiful and poetic.

Q: Your commitment to social issues is commendable. Aside from “Transmission,” are there other causes you actively support?
A: I am actively helping the plight of animals. I have rescued over 20 dogs and found them homes. There is an animal rescue kennel in my neighborhood in Brooklyn that I often visit.
Q: Speaking of “Transmission,” does the project have a defined ending, or do you envision it evolving in other ways?
A:That’s a good question. Even though the novella has an ending, the project wasn’t designed to have one specific ending. It is still going after 3 years and the direction that it’s going in naturally is to become a film. I have been thinking about how that would look and feel. It’s in the process.
In this classic interview, we’ve had the privilege of delving into the captivating world of Jean-Christophe Couet, discovering the profound inspiration behind his ongoing project “Transmission” and the depth of his creative influences. His commitment to art, social causes, and innovation continues to shape the landscape of visual arts.
